What Traits Should Good Caregivers Possess?

Caregiver_tea_Senior-LR.jpgWith a title that includes the word care and giver, it might seem like the characteristics of a person in this role would be easy to identify. But the truth is that taking care of other humans can be more complicated than it seems. Knowing the traits that all good caregivers should embrace is directly tied to the level of care their clients will receive?

Why are traits like trustworthiness, kindness, patience, reliability and attentiveness crucial to this job description?

  • Trustworthiness -  It's hard to bring someone into your life and your home, touching your things and dealing with sensitive issues. When a caregiver possesses a trustworthy demeanor, the client is at ease and able to focus on their needs instead of keeping an eye on this new stranger. This peace of mind extends to their family and other caregivers as well.

  • Kindness - Kindness is a necessary trait when dealing with individuals who are in a position of need. Being anything but kind is a sign that a caregiver should pursue another line of work.

  • Patience - Caring for others can be trying and challenging almost all of the time. Without patience, both the caregiver and the client will suffer.

  • Reliability - Clients are often alone if caregivers are not prompt and present for their entire shift. This is not only a poor work ethic, but leaves the client vulnerable to accidents and in real danger.

  • Attention - Clients in need of care are sometimes challenged in how they communicate and some needs are embarrassing to discuss. An attentive caregiver has to see where something is needed, without always being told.
