Senior_smiling-LR.jpgFrom your grown children to your grandchildren that spend more time on social media than they do with their friends, you keep hearing about Facebook. If you’ve finally decided to take the plunge and create an online profile, then Facebook is the place to start. With Facebook, you can touch base with new and old friends, find out the latest news, and share pictures of your family. Here is how to get started on Facebook.

Create an Account With Facebook

Start by visiting the Facebook home page. You need to provide the basics about yourself, such as name, email, phone number and birthday. After filling out the information, you need to confirm your Facebook account. This ensures that the people on Facebook are real people. Facebook sends a confirmation to your email or phone number depending on which you provided. If you’re a woman and want to connect with friends from childhood, consider including your maiden name so people can find you.

Security

After creating your account, you want to make sure it’s secure. At the top of your Facebook page on the right side is a question mark. Click on it and select Privacy Checkup. The system helps you set your privacy settings.

Friends

Facebook makes finding friends a cinch. The program can search your email for matches and you just click Add Friend to add the people it finds. You can do this one at a time so you only friend people you want to friend. Once you have friends, you can look through their friends for people you might know and add them from there.

Liking Pages

Your Facebook feed or main page populates from information from your friends and pages that you like. You can search for pages for organizations, such as AARP, Caring Senior Service and your local grocery store. Just click Like once you go the page, and you can see posts from that page in your feed.

Creating Posts

At the top of your Facebook page, there is a box that asks, What’s on Your Mind. Simply type something into the box that you want all of your friends to know and click Post. From here, you can also add photos and videos.
