Five Signs for Concern When an Elderly Loved One Lives Alone

senior_home_alone-LR.jpgWhen you have a loved one who is aging, you worry about them being able to take care of themselves if they live alone. In some cases, this is a parent or other family member. If you’re only able to visit them a couple of times a year, then this concern becomes more persistent. Here are five signs that your elderly loved one needs help living at home alone.

Missed Medication

It’s important that your loved one be able to manage their medication or have someone who does it for them. Not only does the medication benefit their health, but some medications have side effects if doses are missed.

Poor Nutrition

Basic nutrition is just as important for the aging as it is for everyone else. In some cases, the person becomes unable to shop or cook for themselves. This is when their health begins to suffer.

Changes in Appearance

If your mom never opened the door without her hair done or your dad always dressed up, then a change to disheveled or dirty clothing can indict larger issues. This includes basic hygiene, such as clean hair and teeth.

Socially Isolated

In some cases, your aging loved one will stop visiting with friends and attending meetings of clubs that they once enjoyed. This can be a sign of depression or other issues. You need to talk with them to find the cause.

Trouble Paying Bills

When seniors begin to struggle with health issues, they can forget to pay bills in a timely manner. If your parents have past due notices or bill collectors calling, this could be a sign that they’re struggling financially or that they need help keeping up with these daily matters.
